Due to the volcanic activity that created the Aso caldera due to a large eruption, a high-temperature pumice flow (a type of pyroclastic flow) that erupted twice about 120,000 years ago and about 90,000 years ago thickly flowed along the Gokase River gorge at that time. Fell This pyroclastic flow deposit cooled and solidified into welded tuff, and columnar joints occurred. Since welded tuff is easily eroded, the Takachiho Gorge was once again a V-shaped canyon due to the erosion of the Gokase River. The cliffs that reach 80-100m in height continue for 7km, and are collectively called Gokasegawa Gorge (Takachiho Gorge).
